Streetscapes
Geelong
Design Urban and Professor Rob Adams AM were commissioned to develop a streetscape improvement strategy for Central Geelong. This was named the “City in a Park” strategy. The study included an Urban Triage analysis of the city centre and design proposals for streetscape and park enhancements. Implementation has begun with streetscape improvements in a number of streets designed by Design Urban, and other streets, liaising with landscape architects, all constructed by the City of Greater Geelong. This includes the creation of a new award-winning Green Spine in Malop Street (designed by Outlines Landscape Architects). The overall City in a Park project proposes to add an additional 2.5 hectares of open space to the central city, a dramatically increased tree canopy in public streets, and stormwater management to prevent storm-related flooding. The implementation work remains ongoing.
Albury
Design Urban provided urban design support to Urbacity who were commissioned to produce a strategy to improve retail performance in Albury centres. This study linked retail performance to streetscape designs and parking arrangements in the centres. Design Urban designed new street profiles which increased parking in streets by around 30% while also increasing the number of street trees by approximately 400%. The strategy provided a logic for creating both short-stay parking as well as longer-stay parking in streets to support local shops. This avoids the need to create more on-site surface parking lots. As part of the analysis, a survey and assessment of activation of streets was conducted to identify those streets where new streetscape treatment could improve the experience of street users.
Alice Springs
Steve Thorne led a team of multi-disciplinary consultants including Susan Dugdale and Associates, Material Thinking, and SGS Planning and Economics to produce a strategy for revitalising the Alice Springs town centre. This work was documented and funded and attracted a $5million budget from the Northern Territory Government. Proposals included reopening the Todd Mall to local traffic and significant improvements to the streetscape in this key town centre street. Works to reopen the Todd Mall have been completed and images show how the reopening of the mall has induced cafes and restaurants to turn to face out to the street, where they had previously faced into an enclosed shopping mall. Since the re-opening crime and anti-social behaviour has reduced significantly. A major driver of the project was the enhancement of a strong sense of place in this desert town, and reflection of local sacred cultural icons such as the Yeperenye moth.
