New Communities
Auranga
Design Urban appointed to plan a 1,000 Hectare site which forms part of the Future Urban Zone to the south of Metropolitan Auckland. Areas within the site are prone to occasional flooding, and these were designed and incorporated as recreation and storm water management corridors to add significant character to the development. Auranga will ultimately be home to 130,000 people. It will enjoy new railway station and a street-oriented town centre focused on an existing body of water.
Auranga is designed to facilitate sustainable living with a particular focus on access to employment. Two independent economic studies estimate more than 100% job self-sufficiency will be achieved reducing the need to travel elsewhere for a job. Dedicated bike paths are provided within the development along all collector and arterial roads, and centres are spaced to provide convenient walking access to services and amenities.
Ginninderry
Design Urban produced an alternative master plan to a development which had commenced construction. The purpose was to improve local employment opportunities and ensure that future residents were not required to leave the development to find jobs. The master plan incorporates proposals for an existing landfill site, a new town centre, and three neighbourhood centres. Schools, active transport networks, recreation facilities and mixed-use precincts are incorporated. A significant area adjacent to the Murrumbidgee River and tributaries is set aside for environmental protection and restoration. This includes a corroboree site which has been listed as a heritage place. Ginninderry will be home to some 45,000 people when completed.
Mangawhai
Design Urban master planned a flood-prone site at Mangawhai, North Island, New Zealand. Water management corridors were incorporated as significant community assets and designed to enhance the amenity of residential areas and provide safe and pleasant access corridors for people walking between schools, a town centre, and community facilities. These corridors and the adjacent residential areas were designed to ensure a high level of surveillance was achieved, and so improve prospects for personal safety and the perception of safety. The master plan includes a new street-oriented centre for Mangawhai which includes shops, commercial offices, medical suites, a new hotel and a micro-brewery.
